Why should I attend orientation?

As a new freshman or transfer student, you’re bound to have tons of questions about UNG – you know you’re accepted, but what’s next? Our new student orientation program for students accepted to the Cumming, Gainesville, and Oconee Campuses will help you answer just that, providing an introduction to the college and helping you feel more comfortable at UNG.

What's covered?

SOAR is designed to give you a broad overview of the many campus resources available to help you have a successful college experience. You’ll have an opportunity to chat with representatives from several departments – including Academic Advising, Disability Services, Financial Aid, and Student Involvement – and you’ll learn basic information about course planning and registration for your first semester. Students will meet with a staff or faculty advisor in groups according to their declared major to register for classes.

Please note that FERPA regulations prevent family members and guests from entering the registration labs. Therefore, family discussions about course selection and class load should take place prior to attending SOAR.

Is SOAR required?

Participation in SOAR is required for all new freshmen, as well as transfer students who have fewer than 20 transferrable credit hours. While transfer students with 21 or more credit hours are highly encouraged to attend an orientation session to learn more about the university, it is not required. Transfer students also have the option to attend T-SOAR, a streamlined orientation program offered to transfer students, adult learners, and military veterans.

What do I need to bring?

In a word: time. We've got a lot of important information to cover, so please expect to spend at least 4 hours at SOAR (not including your check-in time). Students are also encouraged to submit any remaining admissions documents, such as immunization records, official ACT/SAT test score reports, or sealed final transcripts.

Can I bring a guest?

Of course! While students learn about life at UNG, family members and guests are invited to tour the campus and attend a special information session designed just for them. We’ll explore, in depth, students’ transition to college and how you can best support their development and success. You’ll have an opportunity to network with fellow family members, as well as sign up for our monthly parents and family newsletter.

Due to very tight space constraints, we ask that students attending SOAR at Oconee bring only one guest. Additionally, we encourage all students with small children to consider alternate child care for SOAR day, as the program includes several lengthy informational sessions.

Whether you’ll be at SOAR or not, be sure to visit our Parents & Family webpage for more information about UNG, admissions, financial aid, and more.

How much does it cost?

The cost to attend SOAR or T-SOAR is $30 per student, which includes all print materials and a few light snacks for you and one family member/guest. Additional guests are admitted at a cost of $15 per person, payable via exact cash or check at the time of session check-in.

Please note that orientation fees are non-refundable (e.g. you decide not to attend UNG). However, you may transfer your payment to another SOAR session, provided you do so at least two days prior to your original session date. If you miss SOAR or fail to reschedule with sufficient advance notice, you must pay the fee again when rescheduling. Contact your campus orientation representative for assistance.

How do I sign up?

SOAR dates for those admitted to the Summer 2013 term are available via the Check Application Status webpage. Simply scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link to "Schedule Your Orientation Session."

SOAR dates for those admitted to the Fall 2013 term are listed at the top of this webpage.  Please call the Office of Student Involvement on the Gainesville Campus to reserve your seat at SOAR:  678-717-3622.  Please be prepared to provide us with your GSC student ID number.

*TIP - You may wish to consider reserving a seat in the first available SOAR session to ensure the widest variety of classes from which to choose during registration. The information presented at SOAR is roughly the same at both the Gainesville and Oconee campuses, so feel free to choose a session on the campus that's closest to your home.

Other Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I change my orientation date?

You may change your SOAR reservation up to 48 hours before your session is scheduled to take place. Simply repeat the registration process via the Check Application Status webpage and change your reservation.

Cancellation Policy:  If you decide not to attend SOAR, please let us know as soon as possible. You may cancel your reservation online, or you may contact a campus representative for assistance. As a reminder, orientation fees are non-refundable; however, you may transfer your payment to another SOAR date when you do so with two or more days notice.

Can I sign up for classes on more than one campus?

While at SOAR, you are welcome to register for classes held at any of the three Associate Pathway campuses - Cumming, Gainesville, or Oconee - provided there are seats available. (Only students admitted to the Dahlonega Campus may register for classes there.) If you do schedule classes at more than one campus, be sure to consider travel and parking time. The Gainesville Campus is about an hour away from the Oconee Campus and approximately 30 minutes away from the Cumming Campus.

Am I guaranteed classes at my preferred campus?

Acceptance to UNG does not guarantee a class schedule at particular times or at your preferred campus. Please understand that some classes, particularly those at the Oconee campus, will already be filled to capacity by the time you attend SOAR.

Your flexibility while scheduling classes is key. There will be other open registration periods prior to the start of term, during which you are welcome to change your schedule to better fit your needs. For example, the designated drop/add period at the beginning of each semester allows you to rearrange your classes, provided seats are available. We will discuss open registration and drop/add in detail at your SOAR session.
