L.A. Waters Scholarship

Purpose

The L.A. Waters scholarship was established in 2004 by Gainesville State College employees in honor of the late Mr. Leander (Lee) Allen Waters, husband of former GSC Professor Theresa Dove-Waters. Mr. Waters was a supporter of Gainesville State College in many ways. He attended most of the cultural events and just before his death he was taking a golf class at the college. Mr. Waters was a supporter of education, a respected citizen of the Gainesville Community, and served as a mentor to African American high school males.

Amount

The scholarship is a need based award. Scholarship amount is dependent upon available funds each academic year. Recipients of the scholarship will be notified of the award amount by June 1, 2010.

Criteria for Award

Applicants for the L.A. Waters Scholarship must:

  • be a member of the Black Student Association
  • be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours (full time status)
  • Completion of 30 credit hours
  • have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • be involved in community service           

Deadline

Applications for the LA Waters Scholarship must be submitted to the Director of the Office for Diversity Initiatives and Intercultural Relations by May 1, 2010. Applications will be available online beginning March 1, 2010. Applicants will be notified of decisions by June 1, 2010.
