GC Windows 95/98 Dial-in Support Page
Setting up Windows 95/98 to dial into Gainesville College
(Get the Dialin Information Sheet from the ACTT Center for information on
this and other dialin services provided to Gainesville College students.)
- Introductions
Installation of Dial-Up Networking
- Insert your Windows 95/98 CD or have your Windows 95 diskettes handy.
- Click once on the START button.
- Move your mouse to SETTINGS.
- Click once on CONTROL PANEL.
- Double-click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
- Click On WINDOWS SET-UP tab.
- Double-click on COMMUNICATIONS.
- Activate the checkbox that says DIAL-UP NETWORKING.
- Click once on OK at all menus until you get back to the Control Panel.
- Provide Computer & Workgroup Name if requested. (What is entered here is not important, it just must be there to satisfy Win95/98.)
- Windows should now have Dial-Up Networking installed.
- Reboot Computer via Start --> Shutdown --> Restart
Set-up TCP/IP
- Click once on the START button.
- Move your mouse to SETTINGS.
- Click once on CONTROL PANEL.
- Double-click NETWORK.
- Remove all entries in Configuration window EXCEPT "Dial-Up Adapter"
- If there is more than one Dial-Up Adapter, remove the extras.
- Click on ADD.
- PROTOCOL, ADD.
- Select Microsoft as manufacturer, then TCP/IP as protocol.
- Click OK all the way back.
Windows has now added TCP/IP.
- Reboot Computer via Start --> Shutdown --> Restart
Continue Set-up of TCP/IP
- Set-up DNS
- Click the START button, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.
- Double-click NETWORK.
- Double-click on TCP/IP.
- IP address.
- "Obtain an IP Address automatically" should be selected.
- WINS configuration.
- Select 'Disable Wins Resolution'.
- Do not activate 'Use DHCP for WINS resolution'.
- Gateway.
- Should be Empty (No Entries).
- DNS Configuration.
- Select 'Enable DNS'.
- Host: MyComputer
- Domain name: GC.PEACHNET.EDU
- DNS Server Search Order: 168.30.240.11 (Click "Add")
- Second DNS Server: 131.144.4.10 (Click "Add")
- Click OK all the way out to Control Panel.
- Reboot Computer via Start --> Shutdown --> Restart
Setting up an icon for GCNET Dialin
- Close any open windows on the screen.
- Click twice on MY COMPUTER.
- Click twice on DIAL-UP NETWORKING.
(You may need to resize window to see Dial-Up Networking icon at the bottom.)
Note: It is also be possible to reach the Dial-Up Networking folder by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories, Dial-Up Networking.
- Click Make New connection.
- The name for your connection is "GCNET Dialin."
- Specify your modem type. (Default should be OK if your modem is set up properly)
- Click on Next
- Now fill in phone number, and area code if needed.
- (A Dialin Information Sheet is available in the ACTT Center, It provides info on Phone Numbers, ID, and Password.

- Click on Finish.
You'll now have an icon called GCNET Dialin
- Click once on the GCNET Dialin icon with the right mouse button and select Properties.
- Click on server type
- Select as server type PPP.
- Select 'Enable software compression' and 'TCP/IP'. Deactivate all other options.
- Click OK on all menus back.
- How to dial out.
- Go to Dial-up Networking.
- Click on your GCNET Dialin icon.
- Fill in your Login name and Password.
- (A Dialin Information Sheet is available in the Gainesville College ACTT Center, It provides info on Phone Numbers, ID, and Password.

- Click on connect.
- Once a connection has been made, you can run any WINSOCK based Windows program on your machine and it should
work as if your machine was hooked directly to the network at GC (except slower). The programs you run need to be
on your machine. To begin with, you can run MS Internet Explorer (START-->Programs-->Accessories-->Internet Tools). You can then
download Netscape Navigator (www.netscape.com) or other Internet software to run on your machine.
