Counseling & Career Services (Gainesville Campus)

Sometimes just the thought of going to college can be overwhelming. Counseling & Career Services can help with most questions and problems.

LOCATION

The Gainesville Campus Counseling & Career Services office is located in the Student Center across from the Admissions Office.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Short-term personal counseling is offered to students who are experiencing any of the following: testing anxiety, depression, grief, indecision about personal or academic matters, crises, self exploration, interpersonal conflicts, sexuality issues, or addictive behaviors.  Also, some students come for advice because they are worried about other students, friends or family members.  All personal counseling is provided in a supportive and confidential atmosphere and is free of charge to Gainesville State College students. If you prefer not to see a college counselor or need to see someone for medication or long-term counseling, referrals can be made to off-campus psychiatrists, therapists, and evaluation services.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Counselors are available to assist students with their decisions regarding career choice and in developing plans to meet their career goals.  A computerized career decision-making program, various personal/career assessments, and one-on-one counseling are available to aid students in selecting their career path.  The Career Center also houses a Career Resource Library that contains up-to-date information on career trends, job outlooks, salary projections, information on state and national colleges/universities, transfer information, and ways to improve job skills.  In addition, workshops are held each semester to provide career information to students and assist them in building job-seeking skills.

COLLEGE SURVIVAL WORKSHOPS

The following college survival workshops are held Fall and Spring Semesters:  Study Skills, Time Management, College Transferring, Communication Skills, Interview Skills; Resume Writing Skills, Overcoming Test Anxiety, Energy Medicine, Qi Gong for Positive Mental Health, and Understanding Your Dreams.  A schedule of workshops and other offerings sponsored by Counseling & Career Services is available at the beginning of each semester.

WELLNESS AND PERSONAL EXPLORATION

Come to our new Wellness Center to utilize our books, DVDs, computer games and CDs on topics such as weight control, energy medicine, yoga, substance abuse, biofeedback, rape prevention, interpersonal effectiveness, smoking cessation, and hypnosis.

JOB LISTINGS (Job Board)

Counseling & Career Services maintains a computerized listing of off-campus area employment opportunities for students seeking seasonal, full-time, or part-time positions.  The Job Board is located on the GSC website under Current Students/Student Opportunities & Services/Job Board. The Job Board is updated daily.

OTHER SERVICES

Counseling & Career Services sponsors a Job/Recruiting Fair during Fall and Spring Semesters in the Student Center.  Students seeking employment now or after graduation will have the opportunity to network and meet area Human Resource Managers to discuss employment opportunities.
