VA Information on Chapter 1606

GI Bill Website

VA Education Benefit Payment Rates

Verification of Enrollment - Chapter 30 and 1606 students are required to self-certify each month

  • W.A.V.E (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment) OR

  • 1-877-823-2378 - toll free Interactive Voice Response (IVR) line

Follow these steps to apply for & receive your GI Bill benefits:

  1. Apply to the VA -  Normal Processing Timeframe

    • Have you previously used your GI Bill benefits before?  If yes, complete VA Form 22-1995 and mail or turn the form into the Financial Aid Office at Gainesville State College.  The VA does not require that this form be sent to them if you have already used your GI Bill at another school.

    • If you have never used your GI Bill benefits before, complete VA Form 22-1990. PLEASE NOTE:  You will be asked to print the signature page, sign your name, and mail it to the VA.  The VA will not complete the processing of your application without your signature page.

  2. Email the school certifying official (SCO) and provide documents - Email your SCO (see names above) that you will be receiving the GI Bill after you have received your "Certificate of Eligibility" (COE).  (The COE is the document that the VA mails you after they've processed your 22-1990.)  You must mail, fax, or deliver your COE and DD214 to the Financial Aid Office.

  3. Physical Education credit - A copy of your DD214 will be sent to the Registrar's Office.  You will be awarded PHED 1020 and PHED 1000 for the college's physical education requirement.  PE is the only credit that GSC awards veterans.

  4. Register for courses - Please note the following.  The only courses that can be certified are those required for your program of study at GSC.  Courses that have been previously successfully completed can NOT be certified.  Failed courses may be repeated.  Full-Time Status - If you want to be considered enrolled full-time each month, you must be enrolled in at least 12 hours EACH month.  The VA computes your hours by the calendar month; not by the total number of hours you are taking for the entire semester.  This means that 1st, 2nd, First 10 week, and Last 10 week classes could affect the number of hours in which you are enrolled EACH month.  Summer Semester - 12 hours is not required to be considered full-time in the Summer.

  5. Certification of Enrollment by the College - After you register for classes, email your SCO.  The SCO will electronically submit the approved/certified courses to the VA.
  6. Verification of Enrollment by the Student - Chapter 1606 veterans must self-certify at the end of every month. This is where you let the VA know that you are attending class and you are "certifying" how many hours you are taking each month. You must verify your enrollment for each month. You cannot be paid for a month until you verify that you attended that month. Your enrollment can be verified on the last calendar day of the month or thereafter. You will need your VA file number to self-certify. Your VA file number is your Social Security number. There are two ways to self-certify your enrollment:  1) On-line through W.A.V.E (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment) at https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/  OR 2) by calling the toll free Interactive Voice Response (IVR) line at 1-877-823-2378.
  7. If you have questions, please email your SCO.
